DESCRIPTION
The title is in ghostly lettering to the right of the Shulamite maiden, like a whisper it says: The Proclamation of the Shulamite. The darker Hebrew print says: “My beloved is mine and I am his. He nourishes us among the lilies.” (Song of Solomon 2:16).
I’m always startled at the common person’s belief that the women of the Bible were oppressed and without rights. Nothing could be further from the truth. In this verse, the Shulamite claims her legal property rights. The Heavenly Solomon belongs to her. He is her property.
The early apostles understood Hebrew women’s rights, and advocated for them. “The wife hath not power over her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power over his own body, but the wife. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be by consent for a season, that ye may give yourselves unto prayer, and may be together again, that Satan tempt you not because of your incontinency.” –1Cor 7:4-5
If you think these Hebrew Christian women were feisty, consider how bold pre-Christian Hebrew women were. When their husband died, they would march into the house of their husband’s brother and demand (legally) that his brother impregnate her. If he refused, she would take his sandal off his foot and slap him with it. (De 25:5) Does that sound like an oppressed woman?
